Hitzacker on the river Elbe - a place of history
The timber-framed town of Hitzacker is dominated to a large degree by the presence of the river Elbe. The old town itself is situated on an island formed by the navigable section of the Jeetzel where it joins the larger river. The town offers quaint half-timbered houses, one of the northernmost vineyards in Germany and much more besides. The town looks back on an eventful history. Even before the award of town status in 1258 and the first documented mention of the town in 1203, it is known that a Slavic settlement with an accompanying fortification was located on the Weinberg, and the prehistoric occupation phases date back to the Neolithic period.

The youth hostel is located in a forest within 20-30 minutes walking distance from the town centre.
The modern building is well equipped for disabled persons. The youth hostel is a member of the German Youth Hostel Association “Deutsches Jugendherbergswerk”. It has more than 165 beds (2-, 3- and 4-bed rooms), and day and recreation rooms, music room, volleyball court, table tennis, chess, and barbecue are available.

“Land Kamerun” is in a secluded location surrounded by nature within 40-50 minutes walking distance from Hitzacker.
